Acupuncture Practice

This page is a brief overview of what to expect from an acupuncture treatment.

How Does It Work?

Acupuncture is based on a complex knowledge of the body's twelve life force pathways, the meridians, and the function of their corresponding organ systems. The flow of subtle energy in the channels is harmonised and revitalised by stimulating points on the surface of the skin. (For a more detailed explanation, click here)

How Does It Feel?

An acupuncture treatment is usually very easy to handle, very comfortable. The needles are ultra-thin. You may welll feel a local sensation with the insertion of the needle. This feeeling may be a mild pressure, a grabbing sensation or even a small sting, like an ant bight. In some circumstances you may feel a strong jolt, at other times you will not feel anything at all.

In all cases the sensation is momentary and after the insertion you can experience a warm, spreading relaxation with minimal sensation. At this stage the body's immune system is kicking in and producing endorphines, relaxation hormones. Many people sink into a deep, trance-like rest or drift in and out of sleep.

How Will You Feel Afterwards?

Generally you will feel a lot better than when you walked in. It is usual to feel light or dreamy or even slightly dizzy. Certainly you can expect to feel an improvement in your specific symptoms, general well being and mind state. If not, either you have a long term, serious illness which will take a lot of treattment to resolve, or it's time to find another acupuncturist. A distinct relief of pain is very common after only one treatment.

Is It Safe and Clean?

Absolutely. All needles are disposable, used once only for each individual and then discarded.

What Can Acupuncture Treat?

Acupuncture has an excellent record of effectiveness. Many difficult and distressing conditions can be alleviated and resolved including asthma, arthritis, anxiety, mental disorders, musculoskeletal pain, menstrual pain and disharmonies, chronic fatigue syndrome, digestive disorders and migraines.

Most people, in most conditions, will experience substantial improvement in health with a series of acupuncture treatments.

How Soon Can You Expect Results?

As you would expect, chronic conditions require patience; long term treatment may be necessary for effective results. Acute conditions such as sinusitis or musculo-skeletal pain can be alleviated in as little as one or two treatments.
